How to mount a front license plate update#
Because there's no monthly or yearly fee, there's no incentive to update the machine learning models even as every state releases several new vanity plates per year. Unlike most machine learning products, most on-camera LPR OCR get worse every year. Real world use of on-camera LPR OCR suffers from collecting and databasing the wrong data (such as "How am I driving?" phone numbers and marketing text on company vehicles), partial data capture (such as only discerning some of the letters/numbers), and missing data issues (inability to recognize plates at all on anything at an angle or vehicles moving faster than 20 MPH). In the United States there's significant variety in the design of plates, which use hundreds of different background color, text color, letter orientation, text size, and imagery combinations. The truth is that either those 99% accuracy ratings are wholly made up, comes from idea circumstances (perfect conditions, perfect angle of view, and are based on foreign, mostly chinese plates who use white backgrounds with black text) that never hold up to real world situations, or are meant in the character level not the whole plate level (in other words, each character has a 1% chance of being wrong). no separate service you have to pay for) LPR OCR character recognition are laughably inaccurate for US based license plates. Although manufacturers often state that they are 99% accurate, the best on-camera (i.e. Some companies have started trying to make cameras that can do this internally, but so far those returned poor results with low accuracy rates.

The expensive VMS software is doing this with the help of rather intense on-site or cloud-based server(s). But to be completely clear the camera, isn't doing the character recognition, databasing, or search.

For example, Genetec or Luxriot make fantastic products with high accuracy rates. License plate capture is not to be confused with automatic OCR (optical character recognition) number-plate recognition which uses computer vision to read and database license plate data. Once you have the frame located where you want it, apply masking tape around the magnets on the backside of the grille as shown in the second photo.A "License plate camera" is NOT the same thing as an OCR machine learning service. As you move the frame, the magnets on the backside of the grille should move around as well. Measure/eyeball the frame, moving it to where you want the final location. You should be able to pick up the grille and frame as one piece. This will "attach" the frame to the grille. Place magnets on the back side of the grille matching each magnet with the ones on the frame. Now, turn the frame up side down and place the grille on top of it, aligning them close to where you want the frame to sit. I also put a towel down on the table so I didn't scratch the grille while I'm working on it. I put a strip of masking tape on the back of the license plate frame so that once it is "attached" to the grille, I can move it around without scratching the grille. If your car has a steel bumper, you can probably skip to step 8 since you won't need magnets on the bumper. Once the epoxy on the license plate frame has set, we're ready to start on the grille.
